Major Information

Disability Studies is a rapidly growing field with enormous practical import and a rich intellectual and scholarly discourse.

The Major in Disability Studies exposes students to the field’s many facets, such as disability law and policy; disability bioethics; disability and the arts; literary, religious, and historical explorations of disability; disability activism and activist traditions; conceptual foundations of disability studies and philosophy of disability; and the rich interconnections between disability identity and race, sexual orientation, gender, age, and other axes of identity. Training in Disability Studies can be an invaluable enrichment of studies in pre-law, pre-medicine, policy, global health, philosophy, government, literature, anthropology, gender studies, history, and theology, among many others. A background in Disability Studies is useful for careers in law, medicine, education, social work, policy, and academia.

Reflecting the field’s roots in disability justice and disability rights, the Disability Studies Major enables students to engage in community-based learning as well as rigorous scholarship.
