Creation of a Major in Disability Studies

It’s official.

The board of Georgetown University has voted to approve the creation of a major in Disability Studies beginning Fall ’25. This event has been many years in the making. We thank, first of all, the many students over the years who pushed Georgetown to create curricular offerings in disability studies, such as a minor, grad certificate, and now a major. We also thank the fantastic leadership of past directors Libbie Rifkin, Jennifer Fink, and Quill Kukla, and of all the core and affiliate faculty involved in the program from inception up to today.

This is a very exciting milestone and one which definitively stamps Georgetown as a global leader in the field of disability studies.

If you are interested in declaring a major in disability studies (and we already know some of you are), please email me and associate director Libbie Rifkin.

Congrats again to everyone who helped bring us to this moment!

Joel Michael Reynolds, Director of The Program in Disability Studies
